Fundación Virgen de la Merced

Brief History

The Virgen de la Merced Foundation (FUVIME for its initials in Spanish) was set up on May 23, 1996, in Quito – Ecuador, as a private, social, non-profit organization, through Ministerial Agreement No. 810 granted by the Ministry of Social Welfare and registered in the National Disability Council (No. 221).

The Foundation was created to help people with different abilities  and chronic diseases, by funding medical intervention and treatment as well as providing cost-free orthopedic devices and medicine, among others.

Seven years later, in 2003, the Foundation created the Special Education Institute and the Rehabilitation Center, with the aim of providing an integral, specialized service to children and adolescents with different abilities.  The institute operates under Resolution No. 011 granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

FUVIME’s administration is based on self-management activities.
