Since their creation, the Special Education Institute and Rehabilitation Center have attended children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years, with intellectual, physical or multiple disabilities and other related syndromes.
According to the National Disability Council (CONADIS for its initials in Spanish), 13.2% of the Ecuadorian population has some kind of disability. To attend this situation, the institutional, educational project offers an all-round quality service in special education to people with moderate to severe mental retardation, developing their abilities, functional skills, autonomy, independence and integration into family, educational, labor and social environments.
The Institute works with the “Ecological Functional Curriculum” pedagogic model, based on the needs of the children and adolescents, which enables them to learn significantly. It has a staff team comprising tutors, physiatrists, pediatricians, psychologists, therapists, an odontologist and a social worker, among others, who apply their knowledge and capacities to assess and participate in the pupils’ learning and rehabilitation processes.
The Institute has physical space for the students to enjoy the model home, body expression room, audiovisual hall, music room, computer laboratory, athletics track, vegetable garden and extensive green areas.
